Functional Area 5

Employee and Labor Relations and Engagement: Introduction

Employee and Labor Relations is HRCI’s Functional Area number 5.

This area considers the skills needed to effectively manage, monitor, and promote legally compliant programs and policies that impact the employee experience throughout the employment lifecycle.

This functional area is similar to Functional Area One in that it is one of the largest areas of exam content accounting for 39% of the PHR exam and 20% of the SPHR.

An HRCI credentialed professional should be ready to develop and monitor strategies impacting employee satisfaction and performance. This would include:

  • diversity and inclusion,
  • safety,
  • security, and
  • labor strategies.

In this section we will discuss ethical and professional concepts, employee relations, activities, data security and privacy, risk management, performance management, termination approaches, and much more.
